How to Download Instagram Reels

Save any public Instagram Reel as a video file. Paste the link, download, and keep it on your computer — no watermark overlays. VidLoader is free to download.

How to Download Instagram Reels

Instagram makes it awkward to keep a Reel — there's no proper download button, and screen recording is fiddly. VidLoader saves a public Reel as a clean video file in a few clicks. Paste the link and you're done. Here's the full walkthrough.

Why Instagram makes this harder than it should be

Instagram is built to keep you inside the app, so it deliberately doesn't offer a real download button for Reels. The "Save" option only bookmarks the post within your account — it doesn't put a file on your computer, and it vanishes if the creator deletes the Reel. Screen recording is clumsy and lowers the quality. VidLoader sidesteps all of that by fetching the actual video file behind a public Reel, giving you a clean MP4 you genuinely own and can watch, back up, or edit however you like.

What you'll need

  • The VidLoader desktop app (free to download) — get it at vidloader.com
  • A public Reel's link (tap the ••• menu → Copy link)
  • About half a minute

Step 1 — Paste the Reel link

Open Add, paste the Reel URL, and VidLoader shows a preview with the thumbnail and account. Keep the format on Video (MP4) to save the Reel as a video.

Leave the quality on Optimal for the best balance, or pick a specific resolution if you prefer.

Step 2 — Download it in the Queue

Press Download and open the Queue. A live progress bar shows the download; Reels are short, so it wraps up fast.

Step 3 — Watch it from Clips

The Reel appears in your Clips library with its account name and thumbnail. Play it in VidLoader or open the MP4 to reuse it — it keeps its vertical shape.

Public versus login-gated Reels

It's worth being clear about what you can and can't save. Public Reels — the ones anyone can view without signing in — download with nothing more than the link. Reels that sit behind a login, such as followers-only posts, need VidLoader's browser extension so downloads can use your own signed-in session; that's covered in a separate guide. VidLoader never bypasses privacy, so it can only ever save what your account is already allowed to watch. When you paste a link, the preview card is a useful check: if it shows the right thumbnail and account, you've got the correct Reel, and you can download with confidence that you'll get the vertical clip exactly as it appeared. If you save a lot of Reels, get into the habit of using the Share menu's Copy link option rather than the browser bar, since it gives the tidiest URL. And once a Reel is in your library it stays there until you delete it, so you can build up a themed collection — recipes, workouts, travel ideas — that's searchable long after the originals have scrolled away.

Tips for better downloads

  • Public Reels only. VidLoader can save content your account could already view — see the note below for login-gated posts.
  • Need a private or followers-only Reel? Connect your session with the browser extension — full details in downloading Instagram videos that need login.
  • Just the audio? Switch to Audio (MP3) before downloading.
  • Automate a favorite account with monitored downloads.
